Heavy rain propels Seattle to 4th-wettest April day on record

Rainy skies over Pike Place Market

If you thought it rained cats and dogs Saturday, you were on to something.

It was the wettest April day in a generation.

A whopping 1.70 inches of rain pelted Seattle from dawn to dusk, making for the biggest April soaker since 1.71 inches swamped the city on April 23, 1996. The day-long downpour was also the fourth-biggest on record during the month of April—obliterating the previous April 14 rainfall record of just 0.52 inches.

Here are some other noteworthy facts:

  • Saturday’s soaking was the greatest one-day rainfall in Seattle in over a year—since 1.74 inches fell on Jan. 17, 2017.
  • Seattle has now logged 4.64 inches of rain this April—nearly double the 2.71-inch norm for the entire month.
  • April 2018 is now the fourth-wettest April on record in Seattle.
  • The top 5 wettest Aprils in Seattle, dating back to 1894, are:
    1. 1991 – 6.53 inches
    2. 2013 – 5.89 inches
    3. 1996 – 5.37 inches
    4. 2018 – 4.64 inches (through 2 pm on 4/15/18)
    5. 1993 – 4.54 inches

Could Seattle set a new record for the all-time wettest April? It’s certainly possible, with half the month still in play and another soggy Monday ahead.

It does appear that the weather will turn notably drier starting midweek, with some sunshine boosting high temperatures to near 60 degrees. However, long-rain forecasts continue to indicate more cool, damp weather in store.

Stay dry!
